Default 4.2 cylinder head problems.

Hi. As per last message I'm trying to get time to change 40V AQF cylinder head gaskets. Following excellent procedure from AUDIPAGES I'm ready to take off timing belt and then heads.

I've a couple queries can anyone help:

1. The timing belt 'damper' appears to be u/s. The timing belt was very slack. The damper doesn't seem to have enough force to tighten belt however belt is still slack with 5mm gap as per book. If i lever arm back (using allen key) there is a lot of resistance to movement but damper never pushes tensioner itself. I guess damper u/s. Am I correct.

2. Is it neccessary to pull off camshaft pulleys. It seems that there should be enough slack to slide off belt.

3. Are 40v engine camshaft pulleys keyed onto shafts. I see in manual there is no requirement to use special tools to lock camshafts.

4. I have done a cylinder leakage test and all cylinders ok except no 3 that has 20% lower reading. Spark plug for that cylinder has black deposits on its nose.Probably using 1/2 air gap around(All others ok). I guess this is more likely to be caused by oil leak into cylinder is this correct.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Colin.
