Default '06 S4 rpm fluctuations

Hi folks. Bought a 2006 S4 automatic with 63,000 miles five days ago (clean carfax, 2 owners) and have noticed when cruising steadily over flat land in high gears at 1,500-1,800 rpms or 40-50 mph for the first five minutes or so of a drive before the engine is fully warmed up the tach bounces consistently 80-120 rpms. Because it's the V8, it's quite noticeable and, considering I just bought the car, somewhat unnerving. I'm in Connecticut, so the weather is nice and mild albeit a bit humid right now; i.e., harsh temps are not the issue. Video of the tach in action follows. Any help would be much appreciated. And this is my first post -- hopefully among many more. https://vimeo.com/user1344728/videos

sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... it's the torque converter -- the automatic clutch, basically. apparenty, there's a seal that's defective, and once the transmission fluid warms up the ill effects vanish. at least that was my understanding. so you can either park over a heat lamp or get it fixed. problem is. they have to remove qnd reinstall you transmission to get to it. labor alone is $2,500-$3,000. Then another $750-$1,000 for parts and fluid refill. I got mine done. couldn't handle it. try lobbying tour dealer and audi of america to pick up some of the cost. it is a common problem and were it not for the cost probably should have been a recall. good luck....

If you haven't had the transmission fluid changed, you might do well to start with that first. If you have Audi do it, it won't be cheap, but definitely cheaper than a new trans or torque converter.

I had the issue in my A6, and a fluid change resolved the problem. Audi claims 'lifetime' fluid, but that's not what ZF (the trans maker) says...

Hello,

I have a similar problem with my audi a6 4b c5 300hp 4.2 v8.

When this cold does not fluctuate the rpm and everything works normal, but when heated to be at a high rate between about 1800-2200rpm these variations until I have some 110km/hy remains stable.

Also when you do this is accompanied by a small vibration of 1 sec.

It will be the same?

Thank you very much for your help.
