Default 4.2L v8 oil consumption

I have an '07 s4, has about 15,000 miles on it and so far seems to use almost a quart every 5-6k. Very reasonable breakin, kept it at around 3k rpm never exceeded 4.

Does that kind of oil use sound normal?

Thanks.

Default check for timing chain cover seal leak... (long)

i have an '04 4.2 allroad with now 55k miles on it. just before the warranty expired I had the dealer do a once over on it to see if all was ok. I had been experiencing needing to put a quart of oil in about every other month up to that point. They found an oil leak at the timing chain cover seal. This is not an inexpensive fix nor quick fix - but it needed to be repaired. It requires removal of engine and tranny and the ordering of many many parts to reinstall. All totaled it took 3 weeks and about $5600 mostly labor costs to repair.

So the work is done and I'm happy that it is covered by audi warranty.

3 months later I'm having my independent mechanic install some HSports in the front and rear. He's showing me something under the car. I notice oil dripping all around where the engine meets the tranny. I ask my mechanic if that's to be expected. He clearly states no. I explain the whole timing chain cover seal story - and he believes they didn't put it back together right. Apparently it's really tough to align the cover to affect a proper seal. But it can be done if they take their time.

Back to the dealer I go. They accept that it is still leaking and commence to re-do the whole process again. Fortunately now it is covered under the dealer warranty of 12 mos or 12k miles on their work.

Long story short is I had been having a chronic oil leak of a quart every other month or so - and I believe it had everything to do with the timing chain cover problem. It went un-noticed by me because of the under-engine cover/shield, which was preventing any oil from showing up on the ground under the allroad.

So the moral of this story is check to see if any oil is leaking at the rear of the engine. If it's leaking alot,it's likely that timing chain cover seal.

OK--I've been trying to get some answer on a similar problem. I bought an '04 S4. When I purchased it had about 47k . Within the first month the low oil light came on (the yellow, not red) They discovered it was about 1.5 qts low. (only after 1,000 or so miles) The dealer topped off....After about another month or so (1,200) miles same thing---this time about qt or so. Finally after more thorough investigation, they decided (after consultation with Audi) to replace all the valve seals. I had hoped the problems was in fact solved. However, since that time it contnues to be about 200k miles and the car is about a 1 to 1.5 qts low. Now my dealer and they say Audi say that a .5 -.7qt every 1,000 miles is within 'spec' and an acceptable level of oil consumption. I dont buy it. That would equate to about 2.5 to 3 qts of oil every 5,000k and almost 6 qts between oil changes.

They never mentioned the timing chain pan, something I will be addressing with them.

Just curious any other thoughts or words of advise
