I am toying with the idea of adding an aftermarket supercharger to an '07 A6. My father is counseling me that an engine needs to designed from the ground up as a supercharged engine and adding it aftermarket is a sure way to halve the useful life of the engine. His example is the Mini Cooper. Manufactured under the watchful eyes of BMW, it comes in 2 flavors, 1.6l and 1.6l with turbo. The two engines share very few parts in common.

What does the forum think? Does anyone know if Audi use the same engine (and tie rods, valves, pistons, etc.) with and without turbo/ superchargers or do the engines have major modifications?

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/85119/100_1135.jpg"></center><p>There is risk involved, the added torque and stress will reduce the life not just the engine, but the tranny, clutch, axles and everything else in the drive train..... but, you can boost safe and smart. You can minimize the risks by taking the appropriate precautions (thicker head gasket and better studs, oil cooler, tranny cooler, aquamist, etc) and be VERY diligent about the maintenance (Amsoil every 2500 to 3k miles) and make sure you have a way of monitoring the crucial items like a/f ratio, and oil pressure, water temp.

I'm speaking from experience....

He is correct in the concept of engineering to a standard of use, but installing a kit that is engineered to work with your motor to add Bhp will not take half its life.

As long as you don't go too far (This is Key!) or go beyond your understanding without guidance, the motor will perform well and live a long time.

for a Mustang without doing any internal mods to the engine. Engineered correctly,you won't have the car long enough to notice any shortened life.

breakign point that new rods, lifters, springs, etc. are needed. As for the cooper, he's off the cooper S is SC FI not turbo FI.
