Default Re: dead battery

I thought my alternator was good as the warning light on the dash functioned correctly and the battery did receive a charge while the engine was running. Also, a current draw test showed normal (50ma draw) with key out and doors closed.

Still, dead battery in a day or so. My test: shut car off and go away. Come back 6 hours later and start touching stuff. The alternator was toasty warm (it was cold in my garage). Most likely, a leaky diode that started to conduct electricity. I could have done a current draw test but estimated to heat the alternator case that warm was drawing at least 5 amps.

A bosch reman alternator solved my problem.

I hope this helps.

Default Here you go.

disconnect the positive cable and put a light between the disconnected pos. cable and the battery's pos. It will lit up. Now start to take the fuses out one by one. When the light goes out, you found the faulty circuit. My wife's 94' 100 had a battery drain. It was the power lock pump. When you shut off the engine, there is a 10 minutes timer running, so you can roll the windows down. If you open the door it will cancel the window roll down option. Mine never stopped, the lights on the window switches were lit all day all night until the battery died.

Like I mentioned in my post, when I shut the car down, I only had a current draw of 50Ma, which is normal. Dead battery 24-36 hours later. That's why I started feeling around for warmth.

In your example of the pump drawing current, the current reading would be at least 2 or 3 amps if not more. A great example and troubleshooting idea I must say.

Default 5Watt bulb lit up just a bit, which is around 0.2-0.3 amp. Just enough to drain the battery in a day

The pump wasn't running, but the pump includes the circuit for the alarm and the 10 min overtime timer circuit for the windows. The relay for the timer was stuck.
