Default Excessive oil usage

I currently own a 2005 S4 Cabriolet with 102,000 miles. I have been expierencing high oil usage the past year or so. I estimate that I am adding about 1 quart every 1,000 miles. Everything I have read indicates that this is within acceptable parameters for this audi model with high mileage. I plan on keeping the car for another 3 years and plan on putting another 50k miles on the engine. I do have the following questions:

1) Is this in fact considered acceptable oil usage ?
2) If this is acceptable will this harm the engine ?
3) Does the excessive oil usgage effect emissions ?
4) What kind of engine work will correct this problem ? What is the approximate cost ?

Thank you,

Its probably leaking it, these things can look like the tar pits underneath. or valve guide seals have failed. Have sombody start it cold and see if it blue smokes abit.

No, there isn't any oil leakage or blue smoke. The car runs terrific. I've had my mechanic check for leaks and blue smoke.

crankcase vent system isnt working properly is another possiblity. It will just constantly take in oil and not enough to see smoke.

I will bring it into audi and let them check it over for me. See what they suggest.

Mine only had 60K on it when I finally (after 2 years of diagnosis) made a warranty claim for a new short block. 3 of the 8 cylinders were scored and scratched. After performing the official oil consumption test procedure Audi agreed to tear down the engine (removed the heads). After visual inspection they replaced the short block - all under warranty.

I always used VW 502 approved oil (dealer) and doubled the change interval since buying the car used, but don't know what the previous owner did. Anyone think I should drain and use different oil for remainder of the break-in (2500 km on the new block now)?
