My Audi S4 is dead! Please Help!

Hey Guys,

I am having a crisis. I bought my 2005 S4 about 6 months ago from Walter's Audi in Riverside. After driving it for about 2 months, my engined died, I wasn't sure of the cause but it was covered under warranty and Santa Monica Audi replaced the engine. Recently my engine started to behave in a strange manner, i.e. it was misfiring like hell. I took it into Audi Newport beach to have them take a look at it. Apparently, the cover was over revved, and one of my cylinders hit my valve and dented it. This is what I believe he told me, I was in shock at time because he told me Audi would not replace my engine and I would have to pay for all damaged caused to it. The costs are enormous, 12-13000 for the engine and 4000 for the labor.

I am in no way an aggressive driver, nor would I be dumb enough to let the car overrev, regardless, do you guys have any suggestions on what I should or can do?

Right now it would be ideal if I can even just get enough money to cover the payoff, 25000, but it is not looking good.

you're looking at about

5-7k TOTAL REPAIR to replace all the valves and tap-its if you've over-rev'd. Had to do it...my total was 7k b/c i replaced with RS6 exhaust valves (sodium filled and 2g lighter) This is what it cost me at a Audi dealer...BTW might as well do a port, polish and valve job (about 300 bucks extra for 15-20 hp)

How long driving w/new engine?

Overrev doesn't just happen. You'd know it. Commonly happens when you think you're shifting from 5th to 4th but end up in 2nd, or going from 4th to 3rd but end up in 1st. I guess it's possible there was some defect in the engine you had installed at Santa Monica Audi, if you really didn't overrev it. If I were you, I'd post your question on every Audi forum board to see if anyone has a cause for the problem you have, other than an overrev that you (inadvertently) did. In the end, take it to the best independent Audi shop in town and ask for their slooth work. If they find a defect in the engine, naturally you'll want them to document it. If you really didn't do it, just act honest and reasonable and people will believe you.

as a mechanic, i'd say get a second opinion... you won't get misfiring from a bent valve. you will get a dead cylinder though from the low compression.

do yourself a favor and find someone to back up the first claim... or shoot it down. you'd be surprised what dealers will do when they are hungry.

The ECM stores the exact parameters at the time your engine stored its first misfire fault from the bent valves. Ask to see the printout. If the fault was stored at high RPM youre screwed. If it wasn't, or they can't supply the info, take Audi to court.
