Default You could try flushing the system

first to see if that helps - <a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/susp_whls_brake_steer/psflush.html">Power Steering Flush Procedure</a>. Otherwise you may need a new pump, or better yet, buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself for a lot less (if you are mechanically inclined). One question though, I had what I thought a PS pump whine and it turned out to be a bad AC cooling fan. When the car is running, press the ECON button on your climate control unit and see if the noise stops. Doing this turns the AC cooling fan off. If there is no noise, then the bearings in the electric fan went bad and it will need to be replaced.

Default Hey rico! Where would one find this rebuild kit?

Just wondering if it would be worth doing as a nice little DIY project.

Please, let me know if I'm going to end up ripping my hair out!

Thanks!

Default Hmm...I looked at the

site (<a href="http://www.pskits.com">PSKits.com</a>) where I ordered my A6 kit, and see that they only have one for a 97 A8. :-( There's gotta be one somewhere! I have yet to rebuild mine, but from what I've heard, it's not too difficult.

WOW, that's pretty funny. All the 1987 through 1994 5000, 200, V8 cars take basically the same kits, and you can get the kits from AutohausAZ for around $6. The pumps differ slightly, but the internals are the same. These guys charge over $40 for the same set of seals.

Default Okay, so you're saying I'd be OK to pick up a rebild kit for one of those models?

And it would work with the ZF pump in my car? If so, I'm up to the challenge (if it even is one...)

Default No, you would need to

find one for the our kind of pump. I thought PSKits.com had a kit for the A8, which they do, but just for a '97(!). I cannot find anything for our ZF pump. Very interesting indeed...
