overheating
I have a 2001 a6 4.2. It gets to the normal temp for a lil while and then it slowly starts to go up. I thought maybe it was the fan but it got worse on the highway. What could it be?

Re: VVVVV Look 7 posts down VVVVVV
Ive been have some what of the same problem and have been searching around...
I have changed CTS and thermal switch, but still the same thing.
I found that if it is fine at idle and low speeds, then when you get to highway speeds it gets hotter and when you slow down or stop at a light it gets cooler there is a good chance that it is your water pump.
the pump has a plastic impeller which goes bad..at lows speeds and idle it moves enough coolant through the eng. to keep it cool but at anything more the impeller slips and is not moving enough coolant to keep the eng. optimal but cool enough to where it wont over heat just run hot.
