The expensive route: Audi dealership might do it for 3-5K installed. Of course you get a new engine and no sweat or bloodshed.

The dealership I go to said it would be about 4k in labour to remove and replace the engine because you have to drop it out the bottom. But that is just for the original engine, not getting a new block and swapping everything over. I was inquiring because of my timing chain rattle.

Labor wise your looking at 15 or so hours to replace it it really depends on the engine you get and what is included. So at $100 per hour that's $1500 bucks.
Quite often you will have to replace more than just the engine, such as valve cover gaskets, timing belt etc as the used engine will come with many unknowns. All that adds to the cost but it's easiest done with the engine outside the car as you won't have a car in the way of these pieces.
Overall I'd budget at least $4,000 for a good used engine install with some parts and labor for freshening it up.
A dealer may or may not install a used engine, and a new shortblock is $7000 with $2000 for each head. So a dealer job using OEM parts will likely exceed the cost of the car by several times.

I have a 2001 4.2 engine available for sale. It was removed from a running car, I used the transmission, but I have the engine ecu. If you need the engine just give me a call, your looking aroung 900.00 for it, it has 112900 miles on the motor. 301-379-2624 Mark Glad to help get another Audi family member back on the road

why would you replace the engine. Fix whats wrong. Probably due for timing belt water pump and pair of chain tensioners. Would be better than a used engine. Unless of course you have abused it to death and never maintained it.
