S4 4.2 with cams and port and polish

Re: S4 4.2 with cams and port and polish
The cams will give you more horsepower and torque, but there will be a tradeoff in driveability. The more aggressive the cam profile the rougher the idle and less linear power application. Port and polish will give you a faster responding engine, and a little more power. Neither option is cheap. I don't know what the cost is currently, but a few years ago I saw custom cams for 3.6 and 4.2 V8s being done for about $2k. The port and polish cost will vary, but from a reputable shop it can run as low as $500 to around $2000 depending on what is done. I have a set of port and polished heads on a 3.6 V8 and they really liven the performance of the car. If you are going to do that sort of work you should also take a look at the exhaust system in order to make it freer flowing. As you can see this operation isn't cheap.

Is the motor apart already? If not then go with the exhaust tuning. My experience is with on half of your motor but hopefully useful. I had a 2.0 16v 116Bhp (at the wheels) from the factory running CIS style engine management.
Anyway, we installed Wolf 3D EFI and then began to make changes. First base line dyno with a well tuned system netted 136WBHp. I would say this would be the base line for your engine in percentages. Now we did
$200-Exhaust: 145WBhp
$675-272? Cams Heavy Duty Valve Springs: 162Bhp
$900-Extrude Honed the Head: 182Bhp
I did all Labor minus the extrude honing. Which I would have charged someone about $1000.00
The motor in the end lost a fair amount of torque but completely made up for it in Horsepower. Had a great loping at idle and was a blast to drive.
Now for the other side. I bolted a t3 turbo to a normal unmolested 1.8l 16v which made 119WBHp base line with the Wolf. After about 6 hours of tuning and 4 hours of bolting the kit on. I made 224Wbhp and 245FtLbs of torque.
Turbo kit and Labor ran about $3000.00
Lesson, if you want to go really really fast BOOST is your friend, period....
Oh, and you would have to double at a minimum all the dollars I listed..

the heads are VERY nice...
from the factory...about the only improvement is a 5 angle valve job. I wouldn't recommend a P&P, save your $$$. Add some cams and your gain should be somewhere 10-15hp range. I just had my heads rebuilt: 5 angle valve job, vaccum tested valve seating the total was $348
