Sound clips of A8 4.2 with rear muffler removed and straight pipe.
Have this in the D2 section but figured some other 4.2 owners may benefit also.

Now that I've heard your exhaust ...
I'll be doing the same, while also replacing the crossover with an x-pipe.
I'd been debating whether it'd be best to lose the center resonator or the rear muffler. Sounds like getting rid of the rear muffler is the way to go. The x-pipe improves performance while also smoothing the exhaust note somewhat (and quieting it a bit).

Are you saying the x pile will make it quieter
compared to the way I have it now. I would not be averse to a little more performance and a little less noise.

Yes, and the smooth exhaust note sounds like a flat crank V8 ...
... as in the Ferrari V8's. :-)
KaMaKaZieP's '97 A8 gained 5 HP from only the x-pipe. My various <a href="http://search.audiworld.com/?q=x-pipe&u=17157&s=all&db=1999-01-01&de=2008-03-13">X-Pipe Posts</a> discuss the advantages; one thread includes this <a href="http://www.audipages.com/images/S8.mp3">Exhaust Clip</a> of Sven_S8's x-pipe exhaust.

On my A6 4.2..
I removed the center resonator and there was very little exhaust note change. Now, I'll be straight piping the mufflers to hopefully open it up a bit. I'm just scared it'll be too loud.
Given that the A6 has 2 rear mufflers, I'm not sure if it will sound anything like your A8- which sounds awesome.
What do you think?

i too deleted the resonator, couldn't tell a difference so..
deleted the muffs and went straight pipe, sounds amazing but maybe a little too loud, i've had it for a month or so, drones a lot.
