I'm new also and am in the process of changing timing belt and valve covers on my 4.2 engine. I would recommend reviewing information on Audi Parts - Vw Parts - Audi Parts Vw Parts Kit Company - Blauparts which describes the process in detail along with selling kits to do it. I heard Gates makes the belts for Audi.

Contitech have some nice kits and good quality stuff in the kits made in Europe. I use them on all the VW Audis and any other cars with belts that come in. Water pumps if the kit doesnt have one, i like the GRAF brand or HEPU. For as much work as it is Meyle or GMB dont cut it for me.
