Default Top engine issues to look for when buying 2002 S6?

I'm thinking of purchasing a 2002 S6. Any hints on things I need to be aware of for this engine?
Any major issues or pitfalls. The vehicle has about 51K.

Default The 4.2 engine is fairly bulletproof.

Just check for leaks every so often, and make sure to do the timing belt at around 70k.

Default acording to my mechanic, the 4.2 is a solid engine, but sometimes the tranny is questionable...

...if you find a well maintained S6, no reason to take a pass on that.

In recent years, a few folks had issues with vibrations in the drivetrain, but those were isolated cases.

Happy hunting!!!

Default see if the trans fluid has been changed....other than that, you should be in good shape

some have reported that tires are very hard to balance and there's a constant shimmy, but the two people i know that own one love them and have not reported that issue

Default Agree, btu then again, i've never had an issue with any audi motor

300k on my 4kq
250k on my 90q20v
14 years of stop and go and cold starts(not htat many miles) on my 2.8 C4
80k with nary a drop of oil used on my 2.7tt S4
S6 so far so good

Its all the OTHER stuff that breaks :-)

watch out for the auto tranny, and service it regularly.

Default "and make sure to do the timing belt at around 70k." ~ Isn't this recommended at 110K miles?

I know that you don't want to wait until the last minute, but I've been confused on the timing belt issue for my '02 S6. According to the 'ol Owners Manual, this is a 110,000 replacement interval.

Any horror stories likely if I'm pushing this out to around 100K?

Default Bentley revised the tables with asterisk to 60k in paper book

This is a good question. I have nto actually heard of a v8 TB going prematurely. But if it does, ouch. Not it is nto the belt you worry about, but the water pump or some rolling piece deteriorating, seizing, and g'bye.

Default Is the 4.2 from this gen S6 different than the B6 and later S4s?

Did they really switch from a belt to a chain in 2003/04?
