Default Upgrading Engine HP

Hi,

Could some one advise if it is possible (packaging or any other reasons) to improve the engine HP of a A6 4.2 Quattro (2000) by using a turbo.

No.

I would start with intake, exhaust and chip from reputable company. These together will be good for about 40-50 extra HP.

The 4.2 V8 engine is already at 11:1 compression, so no turbo will just "bolt-on" safely without risking damage, unless you put in lower-compression, forged pistons... To push the 400HP mark, a small supercharger may be worthwhile if you have a lot of money to blow on not much return...

Better bet for big numbers from an A6 would be to trade your 4.2 for a 2.7T with a 6-speed and then upgrade the clutch and swap the turbos out. With that engine you can easily get in the 500+ WHP range.

Good luck.

Like firstorbit84 said, a turbo is not magically going to produce more horsepower. A larger turbo can HANDLE more horsepower, but needs to have another means of getting this extra power. The 4.2l V8 Audi engine is already taxed quite a bit stock. I would look into a chip to get your air and fuel ratio right. Another option would be to check out this company, they specialize in rebuilding HP Audi engines, and could possibly point you in the right direction.

Just remember, added horsepower comes at a cost. Going fast isn't free, don't push that 4.2l too hard or you may end up doing unwanted damage!!!

Good luck and let us know which path you chose to take!

I agree that for big HP numbers Turbos look inviting, but all that HP comes at a compromise of bottom end. If you want a pure performance/track car then a turbo is the way to go, but for daily driving, stay with the 4.2L. I have owned both and the more I modified my turbo, the less practical it was for my daily commute. You have to have it revved for any performance from a stop. I own both a A6 4.2L and an A8 4.2L and love them for commuting. I disagree with firstorbit84 about adding a turbo. If you look at the RS6 4.2L twin turbos you will note that Audi manufactures them with a 10.5:1 compression. A small, low boost turbo would be a great addition for added HP. I think that you would be best to do the common upgrades first as you will want to do them either way.
