what is "high milage" for a Audi 4.2L V8

I've got 326,000km on my 2004 S4 and it runs and drives like new. I guess that's prob around 210,000 miles? Maintenance is key though. Maintain it and it will prob run forever. My timing bits all failed at 302,000km and the engine came out. At the same time, new clutch, new head gaskets, new crank seals, valve cover gaskets, starter, water pump and a bunch of other stuff. The car is in very good shape. Solid and tight. I change the oil every 5000km. It's still got the original 6MT also and it shifts like butter and feels great.

I have 197,000 on my 2002 A6 4.2. It still runs great. I did have a slight miss on cylinder #8 but it seems to go away and then return. and the engine light will come on and then turn back off when it smooths out again. Strange.

I think OCLE has got this figured out & has cut out a nice niche set up for themselves.
They've found & sorted out that the trans is the achilles heal of these cars. That &, maybe, the air suspension. Definitially, not the 4.2 engines(except the early chain drives).

I just saw an '08 C6 4.2 for sale up in Stamford, w/219k miles on the clock, for $4900. That's the most miles that I've seen on a f/s C6 4.2. I guess they're starting to age well....

4.2 V8 Miles
@LarryJa Thank you for the kind words. :-)
Our little business has half a dozen of these as project cars, and none of them have much more than 200K so I haven't as yet seen what happens as the miles approach and exceed 300K. I look forward to seeing that on my own 4.2 V8 though ... I'm about half-way there and I'm putting a lot of miles on it. I've driven it 400 miles as recently as today.
The point made about preventative maintenance is key. I agree.

2002 S6 converted to 01E 6-speed manual. 151,000 and doing the chain tensioners this weekend. They're only leaking, no mechanical problems. Everything else on the car has already been done though. The engine might be the last thing to get replaced if ever. Burns 1 quart per 4000 miles. Which is barely even noticeable. Run synthetic its whole life.

OK
I am brand new (brand noob) to this
I don't even have an Audi
but I am buying a new car in the coming month(s)
and I am quite keen for it to be an Audi
I am most keen for it to be a A6 4.2 quattro (C5) I think at the moment (altho also have test driven a 2.0T Sportsback A3 and 2.7TT Allroad)
The one I am most interested in has "high milage"
Now, some engines you should steer clear of when buying 2nd hand if they have "high milage" for this discussion I will consider
quite high milage > 70,000 mile
high milage > 100,000 miles
very high milage > 130,000 miles
now, some engines I would (provided they had good service history, were running smoothly and "felt" right) have very high confidence buying even if they had "very high milage". Such engines would include Subaru EJ20, Nissan RB series and BMW 2.8L 6cyl. Other engines, even if the seller had a faultless service history, and no problems to date, I would consider ticking time bombs if they had "quite high milage" and some engines I would just strongly advise to not buy (or hold onto) once they reached "very high milage"
I currently drive a BMW (with that 2.8L engine, and it has about 112,000 miles on it, and still oozes confidence) and am lucky enough to have a good BMW specialist mechanic, but unfortunately this means (and I did check with him) he can not give me any advice on how this (Audi 4.2L V8) engine ages.
if anyone who owns one, or owned one, or services them, or is just generally aware can tell me what they know, and feel and why, that would be very appreciated.
Thanks and regards
