Default Replacement for 2013 AR?

I really like my 2013 AR Prestige but the warranty is expiring soon and I don't want to own it out of warranty. I'm intrigued by the B9 but (i) I like buying my cars used (12-18 mos old) and (ii) I'd like to see how Ultra plays out.

So, I need an interim car. While I'd prefer a wagon, the BMW is overpriced, I don't like MB, and the Volvo isn't up to par. I'm intrigued by the VW GTI and/or Golf R. I suspect its a big drop in luxury but fun to drive and practical with hatchback - and seems to hold its value well, which is important since its likely only an 18 month hold.

Question - anybody have extended experience with a GTI or Golf R and can compare to B8 AR? One concern is that I periodically take 4-5 hour highway trips (maybe every 6 weeks) and the AR is superb for those trips - maybe the GTI/Golf R, not so much.

And, happy to hear any other suggestions for a practical, temporary replacement for my AR that will hold value reasonably well.

I have a 2013 AR with 95K miles on it. At the risk of jinxing myself, but it has been an EXTREMELY reliable car --- no issues.

Sounds like you just want a new car? I'm not sure why else you'd ask this question unless you were thinking of buying out a lease? My AR is only 2 years old but, knock on wood, a tank so far!

While I won't deny that I like to swap my cars often, the real driver is the lack of warranty. For arguable financial reasons but also for peace of mind I like having a car under factory warranty.

I had a C5 allroad 4.2 and now a MK7 Golf R. The R is a great car in many ways, but it's not quite the allroad replacement I was hoping it would be. It's ok for highway cruising, but the suspension is much stiffer so rough roads are not fun. It would be nice if 6th gear was much more overdrive as well for highway use. Handling is excellent and the car is fun to drive, although I would recommend the DSG over the manual. Cargo space is decent but much less than an allroad, mostly due to the significantly shorter length. The interior quality is the best I've ever seen in a VW.
