I'm not sure if there is something wrong with my center console or if this is just a built-in feature I'm not aware of..

Basically when I open the center console arm rest, SOMETIMES, not always, I can't close it. It just refuses to close. The only way I can get it to close is lifting it up slightly again, and pushing it down. This method doesn't always work.

Am I an idiot? Or is there something wrong with the mechanism in my arm rest?

It's designed to have an adjustable height. Open it a little and it raises the armrest height. You have to open it fully (or almost) in order to close it.

It is kind of a one-way ratchet. You open it fully, and then you can go all the way down. Then you pull it up to where you want it to be. If you want to lower it again, you lift it all the way up and start over. It also slides fore and aft in any position. Kind of annoying until you get used to it.
