Default Coding the tailgate

Is there a way via VCDS to code closing the tailgate with the key fob and/or button in the interior by the driver seat?

What did you want to change? I have a 2017 and it generally just works, both from the key fob and from the switch in the driver's door. One thing I've seen people code is the delay on the key fob to prevent it being opened by an accidental pocket click, but I haven't had this issue so haven't needed to. There's a thread about it somewhere if you search.

I want to close the tailgate with the FOB. It's not working in my model. I can open it no problem but closing it doesn't seem to work.

I think that the reason you cannot close it from the FOB is that there would be no assurance that you were actually there close enough to make sure it wouldn't hurt someone if it closed.

I was being stupid. Wasn't holding the button down long enough. It closes with the fob

That is strange. Now it is working. In the past, when I tried closing it with the FOB, it did not work.

I have seen threads describing the fob only working from behind the car, and within a very limited range (for the safety reason you describe).

This has not been my experience - I haven't tested the range, but for me, it works from at least 25-30 ft away from any angle of the car.
Make sure you hold the button down for a second or two. You might want to try doing it from directly behind the car, too, in case that's something that applies to specific build batches. Mine is a 2017, built around April 2017.

Actually, I tried it again today, and it only worked if I was behind the AR, not alongside it.

The Owners Manual has specific information about the distance from the car, whether the key fob is INSIDE the car, etc. Look around pages 41-44 (if your manual is the same version as mine).
