"Limp Mode" -- 3rd time in about a year -- what causes a car to go into "limp mode"? bad sparkplugs?
1) it's a 96' A4 2.8 Quattro //12valve V6
my car is in "limp mode" again
the first time it was in limp mode was over a
year ago.. tech ran VAG diags.. limp mode fixed
second time.. went away on its own after like 2
weeks while waiting for a service appointment.
third time -- now. at a steady speed up a small
incline at 60-80mph the car feels like it "surges"
just a bit... not noticable to ANY passengers
anyways.. I use the auto shifter to force the
car to hold gears.. I do it a LOT - could that
be part of the problem? Also, last year
the audi tech told me I could drive the car in
limp mode forever with no ill effects.. aside
from the car holding gears for higher revs than
normal... which i kinda like anyways. Is he right?
Lastly, since something probably has to be
replaced (tranny chip??) is there an aftermarket
tranny computer available... NOT an ECU, I know
that's not gonna happen. Damn hitachi corporation.
First thing tomorrow morning, I'm replacing the
spark plugs with Bosche Plat 4+ -- hopefully
that will fix the problem.
TIA

you guys are nuts (limp mode = car's tranny shifts into "safe" mode so you can get to a dealer)
but here's the thing, the audi tech told me
you can drive a 2.8 in limp mode all day long,
with no problem.
however, with the 1.8T -- I think the turbos
are shut off in limp mode.
