$1600 ring job

My 2000 A4 1.8t needs rings. The car has 195k and is worth $2000 to drive another year for me. It will need a clutch in a bit as well.

any suggestions?

Does the car need new rings because the Compression is bad or is burning oil?

The cost of doing rings is mainly labor, if you or you and your friends can pull the motor and reinstall it you cold save a big amount of money.

The car is not burning oil, but started to misfire at idle and the two people who looked at it say it is from low compression.

Did anyone actually do a compresion test? If so what were the readings on each cylinder? Unless you tested them I have my doubts about bads rings being the real problem.

I agree with Gomer,
i would do a compression test, and if it is low, then I would run some good injector cleaner in it. I just pulled the heads off a car because of a skipped timing belt it was the 6v, but we did a compression test and I knew it bent valves but on one bank it had low compression on 1 cyl, well after pulling both heads turns out it just had build up on the valves in the one head and they were not seating(nothing bent) of course the other head had bent valves, It was a very soft build up and I believe a injector cleaner or Seafoam for sure would have taken care of the build up!
these cars do pull oil in thru the vac lines so they are very prone to burning oil and build up/sludge. They are not known for Ring issues
