Default 1996 A4 2.8q CEL came on again...

Hi Guys,

my check engine light is on again.

here's a rundown: i recently had a 90k tune up where they changed out my plugs. then after a week my car started to low-idle at lights and sometimes in traffic. eventually, the CEL came on. had it diagnosed, they detected random misfires, and then reset the light and sent me off. told me to come back when the light came back on so they could troubleshoot further. about 2 days pass, and then the engine starts choking and coughing again and the low idle symptom (~100-250rpm for about 3 seconds or so) comes back. so i bring it in, they do some more vag testing, and find out that cylinders 1 & 6 are the ones that are misfiring, and as a result is causing random misfiring among the other cylinders.

they track it down to a bad ignition control module. so we swapped that out and that seemed to take care of it.... for a couple weeks. my car started choking up again and last night (for about 10 seconds or so) it felt like i had lost a cylinder or something. then the light came on and the rpm's stabilized. what other things can i look for that are DIY changes?

thanks for any and all feedback!
