2.7T Question (RKA and all those that have upgraded pleae read)

Hey Guys,

So I've been thinking about upgrading to a newer Audi lately. At first I was pretty dead set on a B5 S4 with 2.7T, but with all the turbo failure issues I hear and read about on the forums I'm kind of steering away from it, and looking at the A6 2.7T. I know the A6 isn't a sports sedan, seems to be more of the family type but me being a college student about to graduate looking for some class/performance I was wondering what you all thought. I think I read somewhere while there are alot of 2.7T failures, it's mainly in the S4's because their engine bay is alot smaller when compared to the A6's. The A6's I believe are better suited, for the twin turbo's and have enough tspace to operate them efficiently. Newayz, I was just wondering what you all thoguht, so please let me know! Thanks!

my buddy sold his cobra and got a 2.7 a6

that thing is a great car. he has a six speed, nav, all the goodies. for what it is, it is a great car. plenty of power. reliable. pretty fun to drive. i would definitely want stiffer suspension. its a fat pig with stock suspension. and i would get a chip, exhaust, short shifter. i say go for it man

fwiw

id take the 4.2 over the 2.7t anyday of the week. i had a 2.8 A6 which was insanely slow but a nice car regardless... theres something appealing about cars that dont have turbo lag ;)

The cramped engine bay in the S4 is definitely a problem.

Whether the issue is as prevalent in A6's is open for debate. First of all, how many people (on these forums) own 2.7T A6's/Allroads, and how many of them are chipped vs. S4's? You have to find a way to compare apples to apples before you can draw any conclusions about the reliabity of the A6's. There have been 2.7T failures in the A6's.

We do know this...in the S4, the oil feed line for the passenger side turbo (the one that seems most prone to failure) runs right past the exhaust manifold. Under extreme conditions, oil will cook inside that line before working it's way into the turbo. To add insult to injury, it's believed that the flow rate is exceptionally slow through that line due to the metering hole at the turbo. That allows the oil to get baked in that line even more. It's believed by some that the issue with the passenger turbo failures traces back to lack of proper lubrication. I don't know how the oil supply line to the passenger turbo is routed in the A6, but I would hope with the extra room available in the engine bay, there would be more clearance, or even a heat shield around the exhaust manifold.

So if you had to choose S4 or A6, you would choose A6 2.7T?
