2001 1.8TQM: Excessive Oil Consumption

I've been told by my local Audi Service deparment that it is very typical for my '01 Audi to burn ~4 Quarts of oil every 10k miles. I don't buy it.

The reason for the concern is, during my last scheduled maint. ( oil change ) by Audi, they forgot to tighten up the oil plug and my car dumped oil all over the driveway. Ever since then, my oil consumption has risen signficantly. Additional oil leaks and changed driving habits have been ruled out as possible causes. I drive the same amount of miles.

Is Audi full of it here; trying to cover-up a wrong doing that may have ( long-term ) adversly affected my car?

On the same subject....how many of you have had your oil light come on within 5k?

I have never seen my oil light, however I change my oil every ~3.3k miles, always using Mobil 1.

that's a lot since the correct capacity is 3.7 qts. I have no consumption with M1 0w-40 every 5k.

I change mine every 5K miles - never seen oil light come on..

however, I believe that my dealear overfills my oil every single phucking time, even though I only give them 3.7 quarts. I don't know how they manage unless (1) they don't change the oil filter, or (2) they don't wait for the old oil to drain fully, or (3) they put in their own oil and steal the synthetic I give them (hard to believe, but who knows).

Funny thing is, my last oil change was done at an independed shop and they overfilled it as well.

Also, anyone else finds reading the dipstick covered in synthetic oil difficult?

that's quite high my '97 with 133Kmi burns 1 qt every 7Kmi.

most likely #2. I know that when I put in 3.5 qts. It's just barely below the MAX "line". Also, I

put some oil into the filter and make it suck it up so that there's a little less worries about filtration at the initial start-up after an oil change. yeah... i'm that anal.

I doubt a tech would take <$20 worth of oil with the chance of losing his/her job.

This is my topic of the day...

I had my oil changed at the dealer about 2 months ago...I had only had the car 1.5 months at that point and it only had 6,200 miles on it when I bought it. Anyway, since the oil change I had noticed the car had been using oil (it had never used oil during the previous 1.5 months of ownership). As of last Sunday I was halfway to add mark. I have never seen oil under my car and I check oil every time I put gas in the car. As of yesterday I was a little above the add mark. This morning when I checked it, it was a little below the add mark. I drove the car to the dealer (no oil light came on). They took the car in as an emergency and I just got off the phone with them. They said it was a defective oil filter. They are doing another oil change and no problem was caused by oil filter problem.
