96’ Quattro A4 Broken piece in timing belt cover
Hey guys, so just got this audi not too long ago i noticed it making a belt rubbing noise and then on the way home a chain rattling noise from near the timing belt and serpentine belt area, went out to investigate today and found a huge chunk of something within the passenger side timing cover. Two seperate pieces and i then noticed what i think is a tensioner to be completely mangled with metal shavings alike. If anyone could point out what this piece goes too that would be great! And if anyone has had this problem before please let me know how to fix it lol this is my first audi and im still not too keen on it

I had a 98 2.8 that the tensioner bearings went bad and nearly took out the timing belt. The pulley went wobbly and wore through most of the belt in short order. The belt was almost gone when I had it repaired. Maybe another few miles of driving and I would have needed an engine rebuild.
My my point is do not dally on this. Get it checked out by someone who knows Audi engines well, not just an “all makes and models” shop.
