A4 1.8T Transmission cooler line repair
Hi guys,
As stated, I own a '99 A4 1.8T Q sedan with the 5-speed tip. The metallic side of the transmission cooler lines to the radiator is badly rusted, and on the verge of failure. I know the easy (and expensive) way to go would be to just replace the lines, but I am planning on cutting back to good metal with a pipe cutter and replacing the bad sections with rubber line.
Will power steering return hose work without degrading to heat, temp, and pressure created by the ATF? Or do I need a specialized ATF hose? Will the best way to go about attaching the new line on either side be to make a bubble flare and simply slip the new rubber line over the flare, then hold it in place with a hose clamp? This is the way I'm leaning right now, but as I'm unaware of the exact pressures, temps, etc., that I'll be dealing with, I'd love a few other opinions.
Another, and probably more difficult, route that I'm contemplating would be to deal with the fitting present at the stock cooler and at the midpoint of the stock cooler line - each stock cooler line is a two piece set up, with a flexible rubber section coming out of the transmission then joining with the metal section about half way to the cooler - and install a steel braided line. Might this be the way to go?
Any input is helpful. Thanks!
