A4 1.8T vs 2.8 reliability
Hello all, I'm still a novice on this forum, although I have had some experience working on my previous b5 1.8t and my c5 a6 2.7t. I'm on a tighter budget than I was in the past, and am looking to downgrade back to a b5 A4. I know they aren't exactly rocketships, but I have heard the later models of the 2.8 (12v vs the updated 20v I believe) are highly regarded as being bulletproof engines in terms of audi standards. I was wondering if I could get some input from the experienced members here about the pros and cons of the differing powerplants. I know there aren't many mods available to add power to the 2.8, but I have heard it is more reliable overall and my current situation makes that my imperative. Any comments and input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and happy motoring!

Thanks John, is there any way to tell how much life is left in the turbo short of taking it all apart? I have heard of pneumatic boost gauges you can hook up to see if its still spooling up proper, but I'm not sure if that is a good indicator of actual turbine reliability

Have never owned a 1.8 but have two 2.7 A6. The turbo is not as fragile as many state. That said, the extra plumbing is an issue as the cars age. Only drove an A4 1.8 for a day and was underwhelmed. Have also owned two of the 2.8 30 valve cars. They are much cheaper to maintain. The A4 2.8 with a 5 speed was no slouch. Not a rocket but plenty quick.
