Default A4 2001

Just got 2001 A4 1.8 quatro with auto. My first audi. Very frequently I hear a noise -- kind of a muted elephant or low pitch trumpet (??) -- difficult to discribe. It happens around gear switching and may last for up to a few seconds (normally, half a second or a second). YOu can "fix" the speed during the noise and it will last much longer. Is it turbo or what? Called dealer -- he told it is normal even he did not understand my description (I guess...)<p>AxG

Default Beware of dealers who claim that elephant noises are normal...

I wouldn't consider this noise normal. Does it happen when the engine is under load or in between shifts? Does it happen only on warmer days?

Default Maybe Dumbo is trapped in the trunk! ;-) Sounds like the turbo but

it may be a problem. Go to the dealer and take a demo out for a drive to compare.<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=161"</a><img SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/a4registrydl.jpg" BORDER=0></a>

Default

Is this noise coming from the front or back of the car?
