A4 B5 Auto Gearbox issue from Newbie!
Hi Guys,
I'm new here and new to Audi, had numerous BMWs (still run an E39 540i) but thought I would venture over to the other side!
So, bought a 98 A4 1.8 Petrol auto for next to nothing to run for a bit. But, the gearbox is slipping. When you apply the pedal it revs, then kicks in with a jolt. Same from 1st to 3rd and in reverse. Seems to rev high before changing too. Took it to the garage, the gearbox oil level is fine, but they reckon it needs a Valve Body and a rebuild at £2,200!! Gulp!
So, my question is, is there anything I can do the smooth out this gar change so I can just run the car for a year. Don't need a permanent solution, I just need to patch it up. Is this possible? They did clear some fault codes, which seemed to make it better for a few miles. Is it worth buying a machine to clear the codes?
Please help! Don't want to scrap the car before I've even got the V5 back!
Any help greatly appreciated.
We had an M reg bright red Audi 80 2.6 (I think it was) Avant back in the day if that helps! And my dad now runs an RS3.

lots written here over the years. spend time searching old posts for ones similar to your issue. The Tiptronics have lots of old posts. I am not a trans guy.

I have this problem in two of my audis, a few days ago i found that its possibly a worn & leaking Pressure Regulator Valve inside the transmission.
in one car i(1997 A3 ) its intermittent, probably depending on temp & how its driven. In the 2001 A4 B5.5 it changes out of one gear & then the revs shoot up & then 'Bang' into the next upper gear. I can feel it shift out of gear, and drop the revs & its not so bad.
i haven't checked for fault codes yet, and the gooseneck shaped plastic Crankcase ventilation ( non turbo ) housing is broken where the hose joins onto it. ( A different car, same setup, same broken part, didnt have gearbox problems, but... Fix all the broken stuff that you know about before attempting other stuff )
The joy to this fix is thats its quite easy. Drain the ATF fluid, remove pan, filter, front valve body, replace long pin with new one with new designed seals, fit valve body, hew filter, pan & new fluid.
Theres a PDF on the website that explains it perfectly. Basically since the long valve/piston does a lot of work, it wears.
They replace it with a very slightly oversize version with updated seals on it.

Have you checked and filled the ATF fluid? If so, did you check it with the car running, completely level and up to temp? This is a must or you won’t have enough in the system. This is the first step before doing anything else.
