ABS does not work in reverse (long)...
I searched the archives for "ABS and reverse" and did not find anything on this topic specifically for the A4. Having said that, let me share my experience this past weekend.<p>I was driving to Killington, VT with a buddy for the last snowboard ride of the season. We arrive in town at 12:30 AM Saturday. The twisting road up to the condo was dry with visible sand. Since the road was empty at the time, I was driving relatively hard doing my best Hannu Mikkola impression. The car was simply awesome! However, my navigator ;-) was late at giving the signal to turn left and we missed a corner. I slam on the brakes and the ABS instantly activated. Since we were going uphill, I only had to gas it in reverse for a second and allow the car to coast for about 10 feet. I slam on the brakes and the wheels locked! We weren't in any danger but we were both surprised.<p>I read that the TT has the Haldex system, which allows ABS to work in reverse. best ski day of the year and Bear Mountain deck party was great too
God wasn't Saturday just the best day of the year to be out on the mountain. I don't think the weather could have been any better.<p>Don't give up on boarding so soon. i tried it this winter, and it worked!<br>You have to be going fast enough however.<br>There appears to be a threshold after which the ABS is not activated. This kind of makes sense, as on pure ice you would not activate at all!<p><br>1996 a4 2.8 qm<p>I want the snow back!! (just kidding, its track time!!)

I agree - All the panzees call it quits too early.
April-May is usually the best of the season. No lines, great weather, decent conditions. Look for me in the Mogul Competition on Outer Limits, I made it to the second round last year.<p>OL and Superstar have 20+ feet of man made snow on them. Sorry- wasn't attacking you personally...
Just explaining why it's my favorite time of year. I was referring to the low-life and riff-raff that pollute the mountain, and the entire state of VT on peak months. I've had skis and boot bags stolen, cars broken into, etc. I won't even go near Killington/Okemo at times like President's Weekend.

It all has to do with overall and relative speed!
ABS can only decide based on two things that I'm aware of, and I'm note sure, but I think Audi only uses #1. And at low speeds I think ABS is off all together.<p>1. speed differential between wheels. <p>2. change in wheel speed/time.<p>Case 1 doesn't apply since you locked all 4 wheels at the same time.<p>Case 2: If the ABS brain thought it was possible to stop on dry perfect traction pavement with ultra sticky tires, or whatever they use for a basis from your speed in the amount of time it took to lock the wheels then it would not engage.<p>Since #2 depends on way to many factors(tires, brakes, road), I think Audi relies on #1. That is why ABS doesn't work on ice. If you can lock all 4 wheels between ABS checks, it assumes you are stopped even if you were going 40MPH 1/10th of a second ago!<p>Then again, I could be completely wrong.
