Default abs wiring/controller questions

recently got an a4q 2.8 1998 and of course it had the dreaded failed abs module. the other day at the JY i got a module of a 97 or 98 passat and plugged it in and low and behold it shows up in vag-com. the problem is it says my rear right wheel sensor is bad (open or short) but the multimeter reports 1200 ohms all the way to the front right at the connector with neither pin shorted to ground or B+. is the passat controller expecting wires to be in different places or even though the sensor tests fine via MM could it be a problem?
thanks

You could swap sensors with another wheel. It's not that big of a job. Follow the cable to a grommet in the wheel well, pry that out and there's a plug behind that.

I thought about jjumpering the right to tbe left and left to right to see if the code moved. Anyone have the pinouts for a 98 passat and 98 a4?

I *think* i may have found an answer. after a lot of searching i found an abs wiring diagram for a 2000 that *probably* still applies. it *looks* (if this diagram is accurate) like G44 (rear right sensor) is wired to pin 1&2 of a 'quattro' controller but in a FWD model G44 is wired to pin 1&3. Assuming there's no insane reason why i shouldn't move pin 2 to pin 3 i'm gonna give that a go later on when i get a chance.

A quattro controller will not work in a WWD car.

I was just talking about the ABS sensor. Those are interchangable aren't they?

Yes. Even if the plugs are different.

well, i got a chance to try my idea (no offense mtroxel, but like i said it metered out fine at the connector) and BAM the abs light is out! i *understand* that there's got to be some difference between the FWD & 4WD module otherwise there wouldn't be a 1 wire difference but my LIGHTS are out and that f-ing beeping is gone. This gives me time to continue searching the local pull-a-parts for a more relevant module. And, maybe there really isn't a difference, it'd be nice to know what changes from one module to another. This is the module off of a 1998 VW passat v6.

ABS is a critical part of the quattro system. The WWD units do not have the electronics to run quattro.
