I finally "get it".The four circles of the Audi logo represent belts.

To a newby's naked eye it looks like the roller on the drive belt's tensioner seized. The belt polished up the roller's surface real nice and then slipped of intact. Ongoing engine bay noise tried to send me message but I didn't know how to interpret it.

Please tell me that there's a C_A_Suit or Recall that will cover my pale, powdered buttocks.

Default That's such an easy fix that you shouldn't have to worry about your pale powdered buttocks.

Get a new belt and tensioner, and install them. Problem solved.

If you can't get access to the tensioner bolts, you may need to pull the lock carrier back. Look up one of the timing belt articles in the archives or tech section for some guidance on that.

Default Done that one myself, if you don't want to move the carrier....

you can remove the electric fan, there only three screws and then turn it anticlockwise, it should click out, then pull it up out of the way and you should have working room.
Also to remove the tensioner you need a 10mm hex, thats the only bolt that holds it in place

Kiwi. My Man. Many thanks for tugging on my sleeve & describing the shortcut proceedure & tools. I was having visions of moping up coolant. This will be the first time I get to leave DNA samples all over the engine of my newly aquired used car.

As part of the sales deal the dealership's shop just replaced the timing belt it's tensioner & H2O pump. They also put on a new serpentine belt but obviously left it's now failed tensioner in place. I guess replacing it would have gone one buck to far.
