Oddly, you may be partly correct.
I have replaced two AEB heads for cracks between the valves on cylinder two.
Take that plug out and pressurize the cooling system overnight. Spin the car over in the am, if coolant shoots out of that plug hole you are on the correct track. In both of the ones I did I bought heads with bent valves and swapped the good valves over. I would not take it apart without having a head available.
If you take it to a machine shop they will always say it is cracked. I don't trust any of them. OTOH, both the ones I did had visible cracks.
