Default APR EMCS Programming Cable - what does it do?

Hey everyone

I was looking into getting one of these cables, but I have some questions...

1. Would this work for a 2000 A4 1.8 T?
2. What are the benefits?
3. Do you need a special program to reprogram the chip?
4. Any other tips would be appreciated... thanks!

Default All the software is available on the website, and works with EMCS chips.

all current APR chips are EMCS; but what I gather from your post, ithe question is can the cable work with a stock car. The answer to that is no; it is intended to reprogram the APR chip for program changes and/or upgrades. It plugs into your laptop and the board itself in the ECU, which you have to open. The benefit is that once you have the chip, all future upgrades can be done at home in 15 minutes or so, add and change features of the programming. You can also add more program slots without sending in the ECU. Current programs are stock, Base chipped mode, Race mode, valet. You can also add security features to lock the programming so noone can change what mode you're in, or even see if it's chipped short of opening up the ecu itself (IF you are in stock mode). THere is also the throttle adapt function and DTC erase function as well.

Default Thanks Ed... I knew you would come through- but, this leads me too...

the next question. If I bought the APR chip, and had the cable, would I be able to add the extra programs for free? Or, would I have to pay for them, have APR give me the new codes, and then install them?

Thanks.

Default All programs are free. You buy slots.

The default is one slot with a chip. When you order it, you can have anything put in that slot, but most get the base chipped program, after all, that's why you are chipping in the first place. Buying additional slots gives you the convenience of toggling between programs without resorting to opening up the ecu to reprogram. That one slot is reprogrammable with the home unit, so if you really wanted to, you could open up the ECU, and place in the one slot some other program. Most get at least one other slot to not have to do that.

Default Forgot to add... You can always add additional slots from home with the programmer.

You get a license file that identifies your new configuration, and you use that when you reflash your ECU. So you can start with one slot, then add some later.

Default So, I understand I am buying the 'slots' in the ECU...

Can I get a chip with 2 slots (stock, chipped) and then add another slot with my computer cable that plugs into the ECU and my computer?

Man, you are one APR guru... you must work there or something ;-p

Default Yes, you can. But remember.....

you don't need more slots to change the programs you have. The slots buy you convenience is switching between them. You could have two slots and start with stock and base chipped, then later decide that you don't use stock much, and reprogram your two slots to have base chipped or Xtreme chipped, or race chipped and base chipped.... etc.

Default Thanks... to further enlighten then,

how do the features (valet, security, erase code faults) fit into this scheme?

Default They can also be added later. Each time you add a new feature,,,

like a slot or the security function, you need to call and get sent a new license file. That gets stored in the EMCS, so you don't need the file once it's used. You can download the flash programmer application and look at it, as well as the instructions.
