Default audi a4 b5 - and the facelift

Hello everybody...
I would like to ask a question about the audi a4 b5 produced between 1994-2001 and it's face lift version produced between 1998-2001.
Is the chassis and body parts the same?
I would like to put the engine from my car (which I damaged it) into a newer version (preferable the face lift one) but I'm not sure that they are compatible...
Can anybody help me?

thank you
Zsolt

Also some other parts differ:

-wheel bearings, the brake pads, the AC compressor, the bosch charger belt and bearing.

Most differences are for comfort, safety and design.
Usual problems are the same, prices were and still are the same.

Swapping a new engine will be tricky, best fit would be an engine similar to yours so all the cables and wiring is already set. Quattro and non quattro wont fit of course. Also take in accout the engine mounts and the exhaust witch differs by engine.

also, B5 cars from middle of 2000 have CAN-BUS wiring, so if any of your parts from pre-facelift dont have that there might be some problems. Also the ECU has to have that.

Or you can look for a B5 with no CAN-bus. In vag-com check if can gateway works or not.

thanks for the replies
I thought that this would be tricky...
I have to reconsider everything...it might not worth to change the engine...
Great picture, definitely a big help

I was thinking to maybe buy a face lift version, otherwise...I don't know...I'm in dilemma

thanks again

buying a facelift with a similar engine or bigger will help. You just swap engines. Ofcourse certain elements might not fit so expect some retrofits

I've just arrived from the car authority...
they say that I might have a "luck" not to accept it, since my car is from 96, and the new one would be the face lift version...
I have to check the chassis numbers (send them and wait for their approval) otherwise I might remain with a car...and not been allowed to change the engine...damn...

Unless you have a car in mind that doesn't have an engine, I don't know why you'd do this. The 12 valve V6 is not a particularly strong engine. Why not get a later B5 with a 30 valve V6 and leave it alone? You'd have a much better car.

Besides, you'd be talking ECU swap, wiring harness swap, different sensors....the list goes on and on. No offense, but this idea just doesn't make a lot of sense.

I agree, I honestly can't see why anyone would consider the hassle of messing with a Pre 98 engine. Spend the extra $$$ and just get the newer car, it is so worth it in comparison. even if you get a free face lift car with a bad engine, it is 10x better spend $1500 to keep/repair the 30v then put the free 12v engine in it!

my car, what I broke it...accident damage...is:
1996 A4 B5 quattro
1.8 liter 20 valve engine
this engine I want to put in a facelift B5...since if I just want to get the facelift car the taxes would be enormous. (e.g. I buy a good car with 3000 EUros and the taxes are around 2500-3500 Euros - depending on the car engine ( I would keep a 2.8 liter v6 engine - but this car's tax would be way too high...)
The best way (cheaper way) is to put my engine in that chassis so I can loose paying this tax...and everything would be legal...

1.8L from 1996 is an old engine. Go look for newer ones 1.8L atleast with a turbo and put that in the facelift car. Anyway best way is to buy a facelift 1.8L ( 1.8 for the tax problem) and throw some extra cash in it to get it in good condition, less hassle and less problems.

Putting a different size engine in a car requires you to change the shocks and springs also especially if engine was heavier, car will get higher front.

I heard the AEB 1.8 Turbo 1998+ is a good engine.
