first was the S1 or short qauttro homologation special for rally cars

Next the S2 based on the Coupe

next was the S4 not a tweeked A4 but a tweeked Audi 100 or A6

then the RS2 an Audi 80B4 Avant tweeked by Porsche


Then the S4 as we all know it a bi turbo A4 quatro


then the S8 and most revently the S6

and a RS4 (splumph)

and when the A2 comes out its gonna get confusing again

The early S4 like you said was based upon the early '90's 100, but when the 100 was renamed the A6, they changed the name of the early S4 to S6 for one model year or so (in the U.S.). So, one year you had a S4, and they next you could have bought the same car and it was called the S6. Now that's confusing.

BTW, I'll be very surprised if they ever make a S model out of the A2. If I remember correctly, Audi AG stated that the current S6 "completes" the S-car lineup, so that's another reason I don't think the A2 will get a S model.
