Default Autothority Chipped ECU Swap - any downside? (repost)

)Reposting from below into it's own thread)
I just spoke with Autothority (Pat I think) and they advised that they will have chipped ECUs for demo and sale purposes (through VW Sport, one of their distributors) at an upcoming N.E. A4 event. I asked if there was any dowside to purchasing a chip via an ECU swap versus having them add the chip to your stock ECU. Hestated that unlike Porsche, where the ECU is coded with your specific car's VIN, paint color, etc., Audi's ECUs are interchangeable and not vehicle specific.
He also said that the type of ECU (e.g., 'M' vs. 'P') did not really matter since a VAG tool used to install their chip would reprogram everything anyway.
Is this true? I may have misunderstood the details but I definitely know that they plan on selling their chip via an ECU swap - any downside?
Thanks,
Chris L.

Default I believe that is DOES matter wheather its an "M", "N", or a "P".

At least that is my understanding from every other Chip tuner on the market. The part number must match! The rev number is the one that does not matter if you revise the code. I would not trust a company that is giving out bad information.

So, if I swap an "M" for an "M", it should be okay?

Default copied this from the archives....

When a new ECU is installed it must be programmed with shop code information, tip or manual,q or fwd.
A VAG 1551/1552 service tool can read the codes on an existing ecu and write codes on a "virgin" ecu and rewrite code on an existing ECU as well.
SO, if you want to swap out an unmodified ECU for one that has been chipped, you must first read the codes on the old ECU, swap the puppies then recode
the new one. This is explained in Audi's technician service manuals.

Can you tell what type (M,N, or P) of ECU you have without removing it from it's housing?

Default Yes...

It's the last character of the Audi P/N, and it's printed on the outside label of the ECU. In my car, the P/N is 8D0 907 557 P, so its a "P box".
Tom P.
98 A4 1.8TQMS Wett
