cam chain rattle/chatter
1999 Passat 2.8L 30V 31500mi
I have what appears to be a chattering cam chain. RPM dependent, does it mostly under load 1500-3500 rpms, only while pressing on the accelerator. If your are parked and rev the engine sharply, you can get it to make the noise briefly, for about one second. It also makes the noise for about a second during cold start up.
When you run the car out to redline through 4th gear, the noise sometimes stops for about 10 minutes before starting up again.
The cam chain and tensioner have already been replaced by the dealer, but it had no effect on the noise. The sound seems to be coming from that area though.
Does anyone have any diagnostic tips or other experience?
