Default Cam Timing off with no codes...is this possible?

I'm doing the timing belt on my AHA V6, and I am to the point of putting on the cam lock bar and the crank lock pin. The cams are not lining up with the bar. they appear to be a few degrees rotated relative to each other. Just enough that I can't force the lock bar on. I have not had any misfire or cam position codes. Is it possible for the timing to be off and not throw codes?

another interesting note is that when the crankshaft pulley is on, its TDC mark does not line up, even though the crankshaft pin fits in.

In other words, should I just loosen the cam sprockets, and turn the cams to line up with the bar and not worry about it?

Thanks in advance.

Default This is an excellent example of why the tools should be used.

The cam timing can be out quite a bit before it throws a CEL.

Break the cam sprockets free , lock the cams and crank in place with the pin and bar, and set the timing right. You'll probably pick up enough HP to notice a difference.

Default Thx. . . I was hoping that was the answer

Any guesses as to why the crankshaft pulley TDC mark is off? is the crankshaft sprocket for the timing belt not keyed..so is was moved when someone removed the crankshaft bolt?

Default It is keyed.

I'd remove the crank sprocket and check the key for damage.
