Car is in service now and dealer just called to tell me that I have to replace my tires....

I have SP8000 now but the dealer is charging $600CDN each for new tires. I think that's a little expensive. Any suggestions as to what ties I should use on the stock 16" wheels? I would prefer tires of equal or better performance than the SP8000. TIA!

Joe (twitch, twitch) 12-17-2001 11:14 AM

that is way steep....like over $300 US? CDN ->US = about .58 right?

RickM 12-17-2001 11:25 AM

Close. Today $1CDN = $0.638584 US. That means each tire is about $383! Huh?!?

Tirerack.com has SP8000 205/55/16's fpr $94 each! How in the world can the dealer justify charging 4 times that much??? Hey bushido, are you sure that isn't the price for all four?? I know dealers charge a substantial markup, but that's ridiculous if you've got the price for a single tire right.

GDavis 12-17-2001 11:27 AM

I'm glad I am getting my new SP8000s for $75

skabaru 12-17-2001 11:27 AM

get the same size in SP8000s, with OUT the E on the end...

tirerack surely can undercut that price, should be a bit under $100 USD....

Bat137 12-17-2001 11:28 AM

Thank him for the warning and go shop for tires elsewhere

I have no idea... Dealer said $600, then I asked "600 for each tire?!?" and he replied "yes".

Unless he misheard me. I also checked tirerack and I think the dealer might have made a mistake. I'll have a word with them later when I pick up my car.

If you want a superior tire at a good price, check out Bridgestone RE730s.

But if you're in Canada, you should be putting snows on immediately anyway, right? So skip teh summer tires for now and worry about it next year.

looey 12-17-2001 11:45 AM

It would make more sense if that was per set

that's $150 CN /tire. Tirerack sells them for about the US$ equivalent per tire, I believe.

Hit up Tirerack.com for suggestions based on your make and model...

As others have suggested Tirerack.com will beat the hell out of his prices. You can order new SP8000s from Tirerack.com or see what else has been recommended in a similar category.

Then either thank the dealer for telling you about the tires or use this phrase template, "Are you out of your _______ mind? $600 CDN? Do they come with a _______ new set of wheels for that price?"
