Car sounds like a diesel at idle
Vehicle: 2001.5 A4 1.8T Quattro, ~110,000 miles
Had the oil and spark plugs changed ~200 miles ago. The car has always had a 'chatty' idle sound but it seems to have been exacerbated by something recently. Oil level is confirmed to be just below maximum.
Otherwise, no modifications have been made to the car between it being regular at idle and sounding like small diesel truck.
Any ideas on the source/cause of the sound?

1.8T does rattle a little, normal. but, the '01 is known for have the cam chain tensioner to rattle
Dealers say it's "normal" too.
What oil are you using? hopefully, you're using a full synthetic 5w40 oil.

Check the torque on your Exhaust Manifold to head...
that's where my issue resided...a couple of the nuts had backed out a bit and it was allowing a slight leak when the engine was cold. Once the engine/exhaust manifold warmed up, it sealed the leak until I was under full boost, then you just heard more of just an air leak sound.
Mine was on Cylinder 4's exaust plenum...definitely worth a check before you go blow $400+ on a Cam Chain Tensioner like I did...

Cam chain tensioner?
I'm pretty sure the cam chain tensioner has a shim in it. When the shim wears, the chain becomes chatty. I've been told its not too much to worry about. Please correct me if I'm wrong...
Part I'm referring to:

normal for a few seconds at startup only. if it rattles continuously it's possible that
the tensioner on the adjuster is gone and the chain is dragging across the aluminum parts of the head and the adjuster.
