catalytic problem

I recently bought a 96 a4 and its a project car for me but i recently found out that they out the catalytics out of the car... the cut the pipes where it connects to the engine all the way through right b4 the canister just infront of the o2 sensors. They welded in new pipes with no catalytics. Obviously the car has the check engine light. (o2, and MAF codes). my question is what should i do about it and what damage could i be causing the car by driving it without catalytics... also what are my options as far as catalytics are concerned, price range etc...

Your option is to slap a couple of universal cats back in. They aren't terribly costly but they should correct your O2 issues if the light is on for lack of converter. Click here for replacement cats.

if i put on the universal cats would that solve my CEL or is that kind of hit or miss? or should i buy original cats?

I have not had any complaints with universal cats causing a CEL. I have run the exact cat linked above as well as some high flow options by the same manufacturer. The 1.8t run high flow cats (much less converting power than what I linked you too) without throwing CELs.

i have a 96 a4 2.8 engine which cats should i use?

I sported the 2.25" on my 96 2.8l 12v. Not much to unlock power-wise so bigger is not always better.
