Default on the 2.8 you have to...

put the car on service mode, this requires you to; "Yes take the bumper off to be able to put on service mode. Find the tensioner. Under the tensioner i use a rachet and an pice of pipe as leverage, i then go clock wise and the tensioner looses tension and it is easy to remove serpentine belt. One think i would like to recomend you is.....Take a picture of the tensioner before you take it off, as you might forget how it goes back later.
Regards

Default VooDoo...if you'd have kept your C4...

it would be a 5 minute job.

Has the B5 proven worth it yet?

fwiw, I feel your pain. I have a 1999 A4q 2.8 project right now and am frustrated by the lack of room to do even the smallest of tasks on the front end of the beast.

On the 1996 Audi A4 2.8LV6 that I have, I didn't have to remove the bumper. Just have to loosen the tensioner, remove belt, and replace with new one.

Make sure you know exact routing of the belt and the toughest part was to slip the belt between the viscous radiator fan (driver side) and the radiator. Hope this helps.
