Cheaper Pentosin CHF 11S Power Steering Fluid Alternative
Does anyone know of a substitute for Pentosin CHF 11S Power Steering Fluid?....My A4's seals are leaking and, at 205,000, it is not worth spending $1000 to swap out the power steering rack. But I also do not want to keep spending $24 a bottle for the fluid.
Does anyone have any fluid disaster stories?
Is there an equivalent FuchsSilkolene product. Fuchs Titan ZH 4300 B ? Anyone used it?
Is Swepco 715 an appropriate product?
I found this quote on Bob the oil guy web site:
"Well, my nephew just picked up a 1998 V70. It was the last year ATF was specified for the PSF. My guess is that, like VW, after the switchover, the power steering part numbers remained the same. That tells me that ATF is fine and I know the guys on AudiWorld use it in Pentosin systems just fine. Pentosin is just too thin, overheats and warps the seals. I flush it with plain Dexron and then use a better ATF, like Mobil 1 or ATF+4 or Multi ATF. ATF is a very common PSF and is probally better in those systems too.
Has anyone used an ATF fluid in an Audi Power Steering System with success (or failure)?

Here's my two cents about that: I had a 5000CS Turbo that leaked horribly. It was the same situation you have, lots of miles so a rack would be a significant portion of the cars value. I tried Prestone power steering fluid with stop-leak, because there was really nothing to loose. I used this to top-off my leaking system, which was going through lots of CHF-11. Gradually the leaks tapered off until it was no longer an issue. In the case of the 5000 there are lots more places to leak, because the brake booster is also using the same fluid. So I had good luck with it, and no down-side that I was aware of. When the Salvation Army got that car with 250K miles, the steering/brake systems were working fine.
