Check engine light

My check engine light came on tonight, seems to run fine though. After searching through the forums, I checked the gas cap, anything else seems to need a VAG tool.

Is there any way to find out what it might be without using a VAG tool? (I recall other manufacturers having a way to make the light blink a sequence that can be decoded to narrow down the problem.)

Anyone with a VAG in the Boston area (ie within rt. 128/93) willing to help diagnose this? Otherwise I'll try to make an appointment with a dealer.

Oh yeah, '98 A4 2.8 Tip.

Nope, you need the VAG-COM software to read the codes.

I'm supposed to meet a member with a VAG to try to diagnose the light.

Meanwhile, the engine started making a grumbling/gurgling noise this morning. The oil was about 1.5 - 2 quarts low when the light first went on. Only 1,200 miles since last oil change and never noticed any leaks. I suppose the dealer could have not filled it all the way.

Any thoughts on the the noise?
