I use the Blaupauk adapter to replace my whole stereo, except the head unit. I have some noise entering the system from the head, (not a really clean signal). I'm sure that it is a different problem then yours, but knowledge is power so I figured that I would just ask since I have a 2001 as well.

my old on had the flashing display and a bad button, this one skips every time i hit any type of bump in the road. I wouldn't expect the HU to be great -- but its odd that it is introducing noise that makes a difference in listening quality. you think it could be electrical related? did you run the signal and power cables for your amps in different locations?
