check engine, oil consumption, and chirp
I bought my A4 in Nov 1995. I love it, but I have 3 things that bug me:
1) Chirping sound in the front (sounds like from 1 of the wheels) when I go over small bumps at slow speed
2) What seems like excessive oil consumption - 1 qt every 1.5k miles.
3) Check engine light has come on - Mechanic says slow oxygen sensors. I only have 60k miles, get 330-350 mpg in city and really haven't a decrease in performance.
Anyone else had these problems???

Re: check engine, oil consumption, and chirp
I haven't yet been blessed with the check engine light and the chirp, but the oil issue is the same.
I have a 95.5 2.8 QMS w/55K on it. Performance is excellent (as good as the 12V gets) and I easily get 300 to 350mi around town and can go 425+ freeway. It does however consume about a quart every 1.5K ( I do routinely take her up to the 5K rpm and above range which will also consume more oil) At first I was concerned, then a long time Audi mechanic told me it was no big deal and 1.5K isn't bad since some go a quart every 1K. If performance hasn't dropped and your mileage is still excellent those are good indicators that the engine is performing well and likely not the victim of overheating which can wear the rings.
I've gotten used to checking with each fill up.
I'm so into this car that it could be a quart every 500mi and it wouldn't deter me.

Mileage issue (is this a diesel?)
1. Chirp is the suspension, discussed here daily.
2. Yep, that is excessive. This is typically due to lugging and or overrevving in the break-in period (sometimes the rings just line up wrong [like 100,000 fords]). Forget about it until she smokes visibly, then go get the rings redone, and maybe some 5-valve heads.
3. I find this mileage (even adj. by order of magnitude) difficult to believe. The old six is a gas pig, and would never get that on a highway (except with a tailwind, downhill, or on a flatbed). So, we are sure we are not talking either a euro car or grey market diesel, right?
