Default Climate control problem....

Hi Everyone,
I finally bought my first A4! I love it, I'm just trying to fix a couple of small problems to make it perfect. The one I'm not sure about is the climate control. The screen seems to go in and out from time to time. All of the controls work, but there are times when you can't see the display. Has anyone ever had this problem, or know if purchasing another unit will solve my problem?

Thanks,
Steve

Its almost like there is a wire loose. At times the temp and fan dispay goes blank. I notice it mostly on rougher roads or big bumps. All of the controls still works though, I just can't read what temp and fan setting all the time. Does that make enough sense?

Default yes it does.

Here's what you can do.

1. Remove the wood trim around your climate control. Use a flat screw driver, and just pop it from the right side, gently.

2. Remove two screws. I think it's 4 or 5 mm hex key

3. Remove the unit, unplug four cables in the back.

4. Open the unit, there are three phillips screws.

5. Be careful with this step. Use the knife to cut through the glue on one side. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it, carefuly remove the face of the unit. It's ok if plastic cracks a little bit, it will hold together when you reassemble it.

6. Now use pliers to twist the metal pieces so you can remove the circuit board. be gentle

7. take the white plastic piece out

8. Now you'll probably see your problem. Are the two rubber conduits completely attached to your LED display? If they are not this is your problem, if they do, then there's a problem with the electronics in the unit. You can probably buy a used one from someone for $200ish, new one for your car costs around $650.

9. If the rubber conduits are not attached, then you'll need to get the LED with those two conduits from someone. Dealer won't sell that separately, they'll sell you the whole unit. I had a problem with just the LED in my car, and I got a broken unit from someone on this forum for $25. I just replaced the LED portion and it fixed the problem I had.

I had a dissimilar problem though. I had the "lava lamp" syndrome, as displayed in the picture.

Default Easy Fix

I had the same exact problem. It was an easy fix, just re-soldering the contacts on the board. e-mail me or respond if you need detailed info. Even if you have never soldered you could remove the unit and have it soldered by someone else much, much cheaper than buying a new or used unit.
