Clutch slipping in 1st gear.

Clutch slipping in 1st gear.
The clutch on my 99.5 Quattro constantly has trouble gripping in 1st gear. However the clutch never slips in higher gears (3rd, 4th, 5th). This problem is the worst when starting from a stop on an incline. Sometimes I will have to pump the clutch pedal to get it to finally catch in 1st gear. Anyone have experience with this problem?
In the search I read about clutches slipping in higher gears, but I couldn't find any good info on slipping in 1st gear.

It's been doing this for ~ 5K miles
and it has slowly gotten worse, but I can't get the clutch to slip in higher gears if I wanted to. Could one component of the clutch be worn out? (Maybe the pressure plate?)

I've always found it to show up in top gear to begin with.
that's kinda strange that it only slips in first. You could have my problem. Mine starts grabbing in first with the pedal to the floor. I figured the master cylinder was going bad but that doesn't appear to be the case. I'm beginning to think something with the throwout bearing is going south.
