Code 0779 Outside Temperature Sensor Intermitent?

When Vagscanning the instrument panel, I got this error code. Does anyone know what this is all about?

I'd clear it and see if it ever comes back in a week or 2. has your thermostat been acting weird?

you might need a new sensor

There is a temp sensor attached to the power steering cooler.

The housing tends to crack over time, and once water gets inside it's kinda toast. Result is the ext temp gauge on your dash will give erratic readings, and if it registers a reading that's anywhere near or below freezing, your AC compressor will not work. So as the weather warms up, you'll probably want to address this. A bandaid approach would be to dry out the sensor and wrap it in a plastic bag to prevent it from getting wet again.

Can a bad sensor cause thermostat problems? My thermostat has been acting up and running hot and my outside temp gauge has never worked. I have replaced the outside temp module in the cluster twice and that didnt help so I think it is the sensor. Does anyone know the part number for this? By the way this is for a 97 A4.
